The brown trout is a silvery-brown fish with a dark back and creamy-yellow belly. The back and sides are spotted with reddish spots with pale borders. Much smaller than the Atlantic salmon. It can be distinguished from the rainbow trout by its plain, dark tail fin and the lack of a purple side-stripe. Size. Length: cm; Weight: up to 2kg. The Borders & Galloway Regions: Sea fishing is pure heaven in the Solway Firth, especially near Port William and Portpatrick villages, in the vicinity of Loch Ryan, and also along the shore of the Isle of Whithorn. The elusive salmon is best pursued along the River Tweed, and the lesser-known hill lochans are ideal for trout fishermen.

There are literally thousands of trout fishing waters in Scotland, from the smallest trickle of a mountain burn to the mighty River Tay, the tiny highland lochan to the wide expanses of Loch Lomond or Loch Ness.
